3Y0Z 2018 Bouvet DXpedition
EME focal point
An experienced DXpedition team of 20 operators are in the advanced planning
stages of a DXpedition to Bouvet Island (3Y0Z). The DXpedition is scheduled
to begin mid to late January 2018.
Like in 2006 at 3Y0X Peter 1st Island DXpedition, EME will be deployed at
the Bouvet 3Y0Z DXpedition for 50MHz and 144MHz.
This time we have improved the set-up's: SDR radios, EME tuned antennas, a
minimum of 1KW SSPA power per band with low noise preamps and additional
BPFs inline to avoid HF-QRM, low loss coax cabling, automatic Az and El
moon tracking system, improved WSJT modes, heavily involved experienced EME
pilots (Chris PA2CHR and Lance W7GJ) and back-up of the EME community.
The 3Y0Z EME operator team consist of Craig K9CT, Just LA9DL and Michael
PA5M. Therefore technical and operational knowledge to work EME from such a
remote, challenging location is assured.

Hello to all,
The team preparing the EME stations for the big 3Y0Z DX-pedition to Bouvet
Island early 2018 will be QRV for a test from Atlanta on
Sept. 9 and 10.
They are testing the complete 2 mtr. and 6 mtr. stations for a final test
before all equipment will be packed into the containers for transport to
South America !
Please look for them if you like. (and if you want to know if you can work
them....)
Call sign and exact grid (possible EM73..) is unknown yet, but they will
be on N0UK logger and possible ON4KST for 6 mtr.
144 MHz station: 2 x 22el. X-pol. M2 antennas and good power.
50 MHz station: 6M8GJ 8el. M2 antenna and good power
They expect to be QRV at moonrise on Sept. 9 at 02:00 UTC.
Moonset is about 14:00 UTC.
Some activity also on Sept. 10 from moonrise at 03:00 UTC.

Newsflash: Bouvet Dxpedition EME progress 3Y0Z
In the short time available, on September 9 and 10 the 3Y0Z- team tested
the main and back-up 2m EME set-ups and checked all items of the 6m gear.
The two stacked 2MXP22A M2 antennas were build up on a parking lot in
Atlanta. Preparing all antennas and rigs took some time, they had to
prepare all parts and assemble the tubes and wires together to make it as
easy as possible to build up the station in the Bouvet-climate next January
After quiet some hours everything worked out fine and they received the
first EME signals on 2m and worked PA2CHR with very good signals both ways
-17 and -19 dB.
Never before a big HF-Dxpedition spent so many time and effort to run EME
on VHF. We EME-ers have to keep in mind that less than 1 % of the total
amount of expected QSOs will be made via EME while 5% of the total cost
are spend on the VHF adventure.
Working Bouvet Island, 3Y0Z, will be a great challenge on EME, thanks to
the team

Latest news from the Bouvet crew:
February 1, 2018, 1300 UTC: Our ship is still at anchor off the east side
of Bouvet. Winds are 35 to 40 knots, and the ship is pitching and rolling
up to 30 degrees. This makes flying and a landing attempt impossible today.
The temperature is hovering at around 0 degrees C. Visibility has
improved.

3Y0Z mission aborted, back to Chilli !
February 3, 2018, 2000 UTC: During the last 72 hours, we continued to
experience the high winds, low clouds, fog and rough seas that have
prevented helicopter operations since our arrival at Bouvet. No improvement
was predicted in the weather forecast for the next four days. Then, last
night, an issue developed in one of the ship’s engines.
This morning, the captain of the vessel declared it unsafe to continue with
our project and aborted the DXpedition. We are now on our long voyage back
to Punta Arenas. As you might imagine, the team is deeply disappointed, but
safe. There is already talk about rescheduling the DXpedition,
